Haredi Military Enlistment Rises to 4,298 in 2025 Amid Enforcement Challenges
The Israeli government's legal advisor, Gali Baharav-Miara, informed the Supreme Court that in the 2025 recruitment year, 4,298 Haredi men enlisted in the military, up from 2,811 the previous year. This increase reflects ongoing efforts to enforce conscription among the ultra-Orthodox community despite significant resistance.
The report highlighted that protests by the Haredi community have complicated enforcement operations. Military and police officials noted substantial difficulties in carrying out proactive measures and arresting draft evaders within this population.
Since January 1, 2026, authorities have filed 348 indictments against draft dodgers, with only 34 involving Haredi individuals, compared to 422 indictments in all of 2025, of which 81 were against members of the Haredi community. This data underscores the challenges in maintaining consistent enforcement amid community opposition.
