Hundreds of Haredi Recruits Join IDF Combat Roles Amid Protests

The Israeli military began its August recruitment drive for Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) men on Sunday, with over 500 expected to enlist this month. Approximately 300 of these new recruits are slated for combat positions in various units, including the Hasmonean Brigade, Netzah Yehuda Battalion, and the Hatz Platoon (paratroopers).

The enlistment day commenced at the IDF's Central Recruitment and Classification Base (Bakum) in Tel HaShomer. The recruitment drive is anticipated to continue for the next two weeks. This influx represents an increase compared to the previous year, with the "Shomer Israel" association expressing satisfaction with the growing numbers and attributing it to their pre-military preparatory programs and Haredi Hesder Yeshivas.

Despite the enlistment, a protest by Haredi individuals against military service took place outside the Bakum. In response, other individuals present began singing "Am Yisrael Chai" (The People of Israel Live).

Recruits expressed their motivations for joining, with some citing inspiration from family members who served and a desire to contribute to national security. Others felt it was their duty to enlist regardless of their background. The Haredi units offer specialized training and professional courses adapted to their religious lifestyle, including officer and non-commissioned officer courses.

Beyond combat roles, the enlistment drive also includes opportunities in the Border Police (Magav Haredim) and the Air Force's "Negev" squadron, as well as technological and logistical positions within the Technology and Logistics Directorate.
