Hundreds of Haredi Men Enlist in IDF, Many for Combat Roles

Hundreds of young men from the Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community enlisted in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Sunday at the Tel Hashomer induction center. This wave of enlistment is expected to continue for the next two weeks, with a significant number of recruits slated for direct integration into combat units.

Recruits will be placed in specialized tracks, including the "Netzach Yehuda" battalion, the "Hasmonean" brigade, the "Arrow" company in the Paratroopers Brigade, and the "Negev" company in the Air Force. The "Shomer Israel" association, dedicated to integrating Haredim into the IDF, expressed satisfaction with the turnout. Its CEO, Yossi Levi, called it a "significant leap forward," stating that these young men demonstrate that it's possible to maintain a religious lifestyle while contributing directly to the nation's security on the front lines.

Levi added that the organization's mission is to build a supportive framework enabling meaningful service while preserving the recruits' Haredi way of life. One recruit, Itamar Reinhold, joining "Netzach Yehuda," was inspired by his brother who fought in Gaza. Another, Shmuel Cohen, emphasized his desire to contribute to the country's defense. Nachman, enlisting in the "Hasmonean" brigade, stated that enlistment is a necessary action for everyone.

Family members accompanied the new recruits. Rachel Zeitoun, whose son is joining "Netzach Yehuda," shared that he found more purpose in enlisting than in his yeshiva studies. Rivka Yifrach, whose son is joining the Air Force's "Negev" company, expressed pride despite initial concerns, stating the family accepted his decision with love.
