IDF Prepares for Record High Haredi Recruitment Next Week

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing for a recruitment day next week that is expected to see over 500 Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) recruits, marking a significant increase compared to last August when only 375 Haredim enlisted. Of the anticipated recruits, approximately 300 will serve in combat roles, while the remainder will fill combat support positions. This surge continues a broader upward trend in Haredi enlistment, with about 4,300 recruits in the past year compared to 2,800 the previous year. However, these numbers remain far below the estimated potential of around 14,000 eligible Haredi youths per recruitment cycle.

The rise in enlistment is attributed primarily to economic and legal sanctions imposed on draft evaders within the Haredi community. Additionally, the IDF has adapted its policies and infrastructure to better accommodate Haredi soldiers, including appointing a dedicated advisor to the Chief of Staff on Haredi affairs, creating specialized courses and units, and providing extensive support for integration and post-service education. The most crucial factor, according to the IDF, is the changing mindset among Haredi youth, who increasingly wish to contribute to national security and actively participate in military service.

Despite the positive trend, the IDF continues to face a severe shortage of soldiers overall, and the current enlistment rates among Haredim still do not meet the military’s operational needs. The upcoming recruitment day on Sunday is expected to further advance this ongoing shift in Haredi participation in the Israeli military.
