Over 50,000 Gather at Western Wall for Emotional Selichot Prayers Amid Rising Attendance

On the night of August 27, more than 50,000 people assembled at the Western Wall plaza for the fourth central Selichot prayer event of the season. The gathering featured heartfelt prayers for the safety of IDF soldiers and security forces, national unity, and peace and security for Israel. Since the beginning of the Hebrew month of Elul, over 350,000 worshippers have participated in Selichot services at the Western Wall, marking a significant increase compared to previous years.

The Western Wall Heritage Foundation highlighted that the rise in attendance extends beyond the main events, with thousands gathering nightly throughout Elul for these penitential prayers. Mordechai (Suli) Eliav, CEO of the Foundation, led the prayers alongside the massive crowd. The next major Selichot event is scheduled for the night of August 29 (16 Elul) at 12:15 a.m., expecting thousands more participants.

This surge in participation reflects the heightened spiritual need among the public during the Days of Awe, a period when the Jewish people seek mercy and forgiveness from God. Notably, the previous Saturday night’s Selichot event included former hostages who offered special prayers of gratitude for their return, with attendees such as Bar Kuperstein, Eliyahu Cohen, Ziv Cohen, Noa Argamani, Itai Regev, and Omer Shem Tov.
