Thousands Gather for First Selichot Prayers at Western Wall in Emotional Ceremony

On Saturday night, thousands of worshippers assembled at the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem for the first Selichot prayers of the Hebrew year 5786, marking the beginning of the month of Elul, a time dedicated to mercy and forgiveness. The traditional event, held annually on the first Saturday night of Elul, drew participants from across Israel.

Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovitch, the Rabbi of the Western Wall and Holy Sites, led the prayers, invoking unity among the people of Israel, the safety of IDF soldiers and security forces, and peace and security for the State of Israel. The heartfelt prayers were directed towards the approaching High Holy Days, with worshippers seeking mercy and forgiveness.

This year, 19 major Selichot prayer sessions will be held throughout Elul and the Ten Days of Repentance at the Western Wall plaza. These events will feature cantors, sound systems, and large screens to accommodate the public and enhance participation. The next central Selichot gathering is scheduled for Thursday night, the 7th of Elul, at 12:15 a.m., where thousands are again expected to pray for mercy during these Days of Awe.

The Selichot ceremonies at the Western Wall have become a deep-rooted tradition, especially among Mizrahi communities, who often begin reciting Selichot from the start of Elul. The events include musical elements such as traditional melodies and shofar blasts, enriching the spiritual atmosphere of the prayers.
