Hundreds to Pray Together at Western Wall Amid Controversy Over Prayer Space

On Friday, hundreds of men and women are expected to gather at the Western Wall plaza in Jerusalem for a festive Rosh Chodesh Elul prayer. This monthly event, organized by the Lehava Center to preserve the sanctity of the Wall, takes place amid ongoing public disputes over the site's character and future.

Elul is a significant month for prayer attendance at the Wall, with over 1.5 million worshippers participating in prayers and Selichot in recent years. However, this year's prayer coincides with heightened tensions following a Supreme Court ruling five months ago that instructed the government to establish a pluralistic prayer area in the southern section of the Wall complex. This ruling sparked widespread public protest and led to the promotion of the "Western Wall Law" by MK Avi Maoz, which passed a preliminary reading in the Knesset with broad support but has since stalled in coalition legislation.

The delay has left the issue unresolved, allowing reformist groups, notably the Women of the Wall movement, to intensify their presence and provocations, including repeatedly bringing Torah scrolls to the plaza against traditional regulations. Meanwhile, the Israel Antiquities Authority has firmly opposed any construction or changes in the historic southern area without proper planning procedures, as stated in a recent strong letter to the Supreme Court.

Lehava Center CEO Erez Asher emphasized the importance of a large public turnout to maintain the Wall's traditional character, stating, "The Western Wall unites the people of Israel. Against attempts to turn it into a battleground, we want to preserve a reality of prayer, unity, and connection to Jewish tradition." The prayer will begin at 6:40 a.m. on Friday at the Western Wall plaza, with participation from hundreds of men and women.
