Over 65,000 Pilgrims Brave War and Travel Difficulties for Rosh Hashanah in Uman

Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, a closed airspace, and arduous overland travel, more than 65,000 pilgrims from around the world converged on Uman, Ukraine, to observe Rosh Hashanah near the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov. The holiday and prayer services concluded successfully with no unusual incidents.

Preparations for the massive gathering began in the winter of 2023, with organizers from the Union of Breslov Hasidim in Uman coordinating extensively with European countries and Ukrainian authorities to facilitate safe passage and security for the attendees. Thousands of worshippers filled the streets around the rabbi's tomb in the days leading up to the holiday, with synagogues and prayer quorums operating continuously.

A highlight of the gathering was the global 'General Rectification' ceremony on the eve of Rosh Hashanah, where tens of thousands recited Psalms together. According to Rabbi Natan Ben Nun, chairman of the Union of Breslov Hasidim in Uman, this was the largest such ceremony held there since before the COVID-19 pandemic. A central command post, equipped with advanced surveillance cameras, monitored the crowds and ensured immediate response capabilities.

During the event, Rabbi Shalom Ber Sorotzkin, head of a prominent yeshiva, visited Uman for the first time. He met with the city's chief rabbi, Yaakov Shiloh, and Rabbi Ben Nun, who offered blessings for the rabbi's continued success in supporting Torah study and for the exemption of his students from military service, given the tense situation in Israel.

Following the holiday, the complex process of departure began, with many pilgrims embarking on the long overland journey to neighboring countries' borders to catch flights back to Israel and other destinations. Rabbi Ben Nun expressed satisfaction with the successful event, thanking all those who contributed to its smooth execution and wishing everyone a safe return home, emphasizing that the Union of Breslov Hasidim's work in Uman continues year-round.
