Thousands of Pilgrims Head to Uman for Rosh Hashanah Amidst War and New EU Border System

As Rosh Hashanah approaches, preparations are intensifying for the large gathering at the tomb of Rabbi Nachman of Breslov in Uman, Ukraine. Approximately 2,000 worshippers have already arrived, with expectations of around 40,000 total attendees this year, despite the ongoing conflict in the country. The United Jewish Community of Ukraine reported these figures.

Polish authorities are urging pilgrims to avoid the Medyka-Szeginie border crossing due to extensive infrastructure upgrades causing significant bus traffic delays and potential system collapses. Alternative crossings like Korczowa and Budomierz are recommended. Meanwhile, Romania is preparing extensively for air travel to Uman, holding a high-level meeting with government officials, security forces, and Israeli Foreign Ministry representatives. A special security protocol, developed by the Breslov Union in Uman at the request of Romanian authorities, was discussed, including advanced monitoring systems and support facilities for pilgrims.

The Romanian Border Police will increase its teams to streamline crossings and reduce waiting times between Romania and Ukraine. The Breslov Union thanked the Romanian government and agreed to disseminate official guidelines to pilgrims.

Pilgrims entering the EU will encounter the new Entry/Exit System (EES), a computerized system replacing manual passport stamping. Non-European passport holders will need to provide biometric data, including fingerprints and facial scans, at border crossings. While no pre-registration is needed, this process may extend wait times.

Ukrainian authorities are enforcing strict security measures in Uman, including a complete nightly curfew from midnight to 4 a.m., with vehicle movement only permitted under police escort. Prohibited items include firecrackers, pyrotechnics, lasers, and motorized vehicles like scooters and ATVs in the vicinity of the tomb. Visitors must carry passports at all times and immediately follow security forces' instructions, including taking shelter during air raid sirens. Alcohol consumption and the possession of knives, sharp objects, weapons, and weapon-like toys are also forbidden near the tomb, with authorities vowing zero tolerance for violations.

Ukraine's State Agency for Tourism Development has warned pilgrims about scams related to the 'tourism tax.' The tax must be paid only to official bank accounts designated by the Uman City Council, such as the official website set up by the Breslov Union in Uman (aumantax.com), and individuals should avoid transferring funds to unauthorized parties.
