Egypt's Massive Tank Force Faces New Drone Threats Challenging Regional Balance

מאת כיכר השבת, דוד הכהן וב. ניסני

The story · English

Egypt possesses the largest armored force in the Arab world, with thousands of tanks deployed along its borders and extensive military infrastructure in the Sinai Peninsula. This armored might is intended to deter threats from Libya and Sudan, maintain Egypt's regional power status, and secure strategic assets like the Suez Canal. Local production and upgrades of Abrams tanks at Military Factory 200 enhance logistical resilience and reduce reliance on American supplies during crises. Despite decades of peace with Israel, the Israeli defense establishment closely monitors Egypt's military developments, noting fortified bunkers, extended runways, advanced Chinese air defense systems, and tens of thousands of troops in Sinai.

However, lessons from the Russia-Ukraine war reveal a critical vulnerability in traditional armored forces: inexpensive drones equipped with suicide munitions can destroy advanced tanks by targeting weak points such as roofs or engine compartments. Logistics convoys and tank carriers are also highly exposed before reaching frontline positions. For Egypt, this means its vast tank fleet could be rapidly depleted without comprehensive multi-layered air defense, electronic warfare capabilities, and drone interception systems. While Egypt is diversifying its military acquisitions, it still lags behind countries developing laser defenses, automated interception, and network-centric warfare.

Israel's military doctrine has never relied on numerical superiority but on qualitative advantages such as air superiority, real-time intelligence, decentralized communications, and active defense systems like the Iron Dome. Advanced KC-46 "Gideon" refueling aircraft recently acquired by Israel extend the operational range and endurance of its combat jets. In a hypothetical direct conflict, Israel's precise air strikes and intelligence capabilities are expected to neutralize Egypt's numerical tank advantage. Nonetheless, Israel continues to track Egypt's military buildup in Sinai carefully, recognizing that even in the drone era, thousands of tanks remain a significant factor.

In summary, Egypt's armored force remains a conventional deterrent and a symbol of regional power, but modern battlefield realities driven by drone warfare have exposed its critical weaknesses. Israel maintains its focus on technological superiority rather than engaging in an arms race based on quantity, while keeping vigilant watch over Egypt's evolving military posture.
