Haifa's Orion Falafel Stands Strong After 78 Years With Classic Taste at 22 Shekels

Orion Falafel, a culinary institution in Haifa for 78 years, continues to serve its iconic falafel at 22 shekels per large serving. Named after the legendary Orion Cinema that once stood across the street, the falafel stand preserves a nostalgic childhood memory for many locals despite the cinema's demolition. Unlike many falafel stands that close early, Orion remains open daily until midnight, with long queues especially on Thursday evenings.

The falafel balls are smaller than usual, crispy, and reveal a distinctive yellow, slightly tangy interior that sets them apart from the typical green falafel. Each pita contains about 10 to 12 falafel balls, with the quantity varying by feel rather than strict measurement. The toppings are simple and traditional: pickled cabbage, white cabbage, pickled cucumber, tomato slices cut thickly in a style typical of Haifa shawarma shops, and tahini.

While the pita is generously filled, it tends to tear under the weight of the filling, and the absence of classic falafel fries is noted as a downside. Nevertheless, for just 22 shekels, Orion offers an authentic street food experience that honors its longstanding tradition and local flavor. The falafel stand is located at 14 Herzl Street, Haifa.
