Trump Administration Proposes $100,000 Fee to Restrict Skilled Worker H-1B Visas

The story · English

The Trump administration announced a new policy to impose a $103,000 fee on H-1B visas, which are granted to skilled foreign workers, primarily in the technology sector. This move aims to protect American workers by discouraging employers from hiring foreign employees at lower wages. The administration expects the new fee to generate approximately $8.8 billion annually.

The H-1B visa is highly sought after, with 211,000 applications submitted this year for only 85,000 available visas. Major recipients include companies like Microsoft, Apple, and other tech giants. Although hundreds of Israelis use the H-1B visa, most Israeli immigrants to the U.S. use other visa types. The majority of H-1B visas have historically gone to workers from India, China, the Philippines, South Korea, and Mexico.

This new fee follows a similar attempt by the administration that was struck down by a federal judge in June. The government plans to appeal that ruling while advancing this broader policy, which also applies to skilled workers already in the U.S. The administration argues the fee will make employers "less eager to hire H-1B visa holders over qualified American workers," aiming to prevent companies from employing foreign workers at lower wages.

Experts have criticized the policy, warning it could severely harm the U.S. labor market and innovation sectors. The policy reflects the administration's broader strategy to tighten immigration and prioritize American employment opportunities.
