US Demands Countries Choose Sides in AI Control Amid Rising Geopolitical Tensions

A recent report reveals that Iran has blocked a US military plan targeting Hezbollah in Lebanon via Syria, warning Damascus that any attack on Hezbollah would trigger a broad regional conflict. The US initiative aimed to disrupt Hezbollah's operations in the Lebanon Valley and impose new security arrangements. Iran responded by threatening to exert pressure at strategic points in Syria, including border areas, Homs, and around Aleppo. Regionally, a deep divide has emerged: the UAE supports US efforts financially, while Iraq and Qatar oppose them, and Saudi Arabia remains cautiously neutral due to escalation risks.

In parallel, the geopolitical struggle between the US and China has intensified in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector. According to internal US State Department documents, Washington plans to demand that about 35 countries, signatories to an AI opportunities declaration, explicitly align with either the US-led AI framework or China's competing initiatives. This move aims to restrict China's access to critical resources, advanced chips, and cloud infrastructure that could provide military and economic advantages. China recently launched an international AI cooperation organization promoting an open-source model to challenge US influence, complicating neutrality for countries like Kazakhstan, a key mineral supplier caught between both powers.

Looking ahead, the rollout of 6G networks by 2030 is already under regulatory scrutiny due to the Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC) technology, which can detect movement, location, and even physiological data without phones. This raises significant privacy concerns, prompting international bodies like the European Telecommunications Standards Institute to enforce privacy-by-design standards, including hardware-level safeguards and user notifications.

Meanwhile, Japan is shifting from a pacifist defense posture to active deterrence. In late July 2026, the Japanese destroyer JS Chokai successfully tested a Tomahawk cruise missile with a range exceeding 1,600 kilometers, marking the first long-range strike capability since World War II. This development reflects Japan's move away from constitutional Article 9 restrictions, aligning its security strategy with Taiwan Strait stability and preparing for potential regional conflicts. Japan plans to acquire around 400 Tomahawk missiles by 2028, signaling a major strategic shift in the Indo-Pacific balance of power.
