Heavy Tractor Destroys Dozens of Tombstones in Historic Polish Jewish Cemetery

The story · English

A serious incident occurred recently at the ancient Jewish cemetery in Brzesko, southern Poland, when a heavy tractor used for urgent restoration work drove over historic graves, causing irreversible damage. The tractor was brought in to repair a collapsed wall deemed a safety hazard to pedestrians and nearby schoolchildren, following a municipal emergency order. However, despite explicit instructions to operate only from outside the cemetery grounds, the contractor entered the burial area with the heavy machinery, shattering dozens of old tombstones and disturbing human remains.

The cemetery, managed by the Jewish community of Krakow, holds the graves of prominent figures in Polish Jewish history, including rabbis and notable Hasidic dynasties. After the damage was discovered, including exposed bone fragments, a community representative halted all work and locked the site. Recently, a focused operation was conducted to respectfully rebury the uncovered remains and carefully cover the affected area.

The Jewish community has condemned the incident, which has caused significant distress due to the desecration of a sacred and historic site. The restoration project remains suspended pending further decisions.
