Tractor Damages Graves and Scatters Bones in Jewish Cemetery Renovation in Poland

A tractor conducting foundation work for wall repairs at the Jewish cemetery in Brzesko, Poland, drove over graves and tombstones, causing significant damage and scattering human bone fragments. The cemetery, owned by the Jewish community leaders of Krakow, is undergoing renovations led by a controversial figure and his brother, originally from America, whose management of Jewish assets in Poland has faced severe criticism. Critics accuse them of reckless behavior and lack of proper religious oversight during the work, which violated halachic supervision protocols typically enforced by an external committee dedicated to preserving Jewish cemeteries.

The cemetery in Brzesko holds the graves of several revered rabbis, including Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Lifshitz and Rabbi Pinchas Templer, making the damage particularly distressing. Meir Bulka, chairman of J-nerations, an organization focused on preserving Jewish heritage in Europe, condemned the actions, stating this is not the first time the Krakow Jewish community has acted contrary to halachic standards. He emphasized the need for the Jewish people to protest and prevent unauthorized and financially exploitative activities that desecrate ancestral graves and holy sites.
