Beetroot Can Turn Urine Red, Usually Harmless But Watch for Symptoms

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

Beetroot is a nutritious vegetable rich in pigments called betalains, particularly betanin, which can cause red discoloration of urine or stool in some people. This harmless phenomenon, known as beeturia, occurs when these pigments are not fully broken down or absorbed in the digestive system and are excreted in bodily waste. The color change can appear within hours or up to a day after consumption.

To determine if red urine or stool is due to beetroot, it is important to review food intake in the past 24 to 48 hours. If beetroot was eaten and there are no other symptoms, the discoloration usually resolves quickly and is not a cause for concern. However, if the color persists, worsens, or occurs without beetroot consumption, medical evaluation including urine tests is recommended.

Some individuals may also experience softer stools after eating beetroot, which is generally not problematic unless large amounts or concentrated beetroot juice are consumed, potentially causing digestive discomfort. Parents should be particularly attentive if their child’s urine turns red after eating beetroot; if the child is otherwise well without fever, pain, or burning, observation is sufficient. But if symptoms like urinary tract infection signs, abdominal pain, vomiting, or persistent blood-like discoloration occur, prompt pediatric consultation is necessary.

The red pigment in beetroot is not dangerous and reflects its nutritional value. This case highlights how diet can alter the appearance of bodily waste and the importance of distinguishing harmless changes from signs of medical issues based on symptoms and context.
