Beetroot Juice Proven to Enhance Athletic Performance in Over 500 Athletes
A new comprehensive scientific review has found strong evidence that beetroot juice can improve physical performance in athletes. Published in Frontiers in Nutrition, the study analyzed 33 previous studies involving more than 500 professional and amateur athletes. The results showed that consuming beetroot juice before exercise consistently enhanced the ability to perform intense efforts, increased explosive strength, sprint speed, and oxygen utilization efficiency.
Researchers explain that beetroot juice is rich in natural nitrates, which the body converts into nitric oxide. This molecule helps dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow to active muscles, delivering more oxygen and nutrients, allowing muscles to contract more powerfully and delay fatigue.
The timing of consumption is crucial. The best results were observed when participants drank about 140 ml of concentrated beetroot juice or 250 ml of regular beetroot juice approximately two hours before exercise. This timing allows the body to convert nitrates into nitric oxide right when physical activity begins. Drinking the juice earlier, such as three hours before, was less effective.
The benefits were noted in both explosive power sports like soccer and sprinting, as well as endurance activities like running and cycling. However, the degree of improvement may vary depending on the sport type, athlete fitness level, dosage, and timing. The researchers recommend beetroot juice as a potential supplement before training but call for further high-quality studies to determine optimal usage protocols for different populations and sports.
