Dark Chocolate Scent Boosts Strength Training Performance and Reduces Hunger, Study Finds
A recent study from the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur reveals that merely smelling dark chocolate before a workout can enhance strength training performance and reduce hunger sensations. Published in Frontiers in Physiology, the research involved 23 healthy men in their twenties who fasted for ten hours prior to the experiment. Participants were divided into three groups: one smelled 90% cocoa dark chocolate, another smelled 60% cocoa milk chocolate, and the control group smelled water.
After exposure to the scents, participants performed leg extension exercises while researchers measured repetitions completed and recorded feelings of hunger, fullness, and desire to eat. Those who smelled dark chocolate reported less hunger, greater fullness, and a decreased urge to eat before exercising. They also completed an average of 18 more repetitions than the control group. The milk chocolate scent group showed moderate improvement, completing about nine additional repetitions on average. Notably, participants did not perceive the workouts as more difficult despite the increased volume.
The researchers suggest that the brain may associate familiar food aromas with satiety and satisfaction, triggering physiological responses even without actual food intake. Dr. Muhammad Nashrudin Bin Naharudin, the lead researcher, explained that the dark chocolate scent might induce a "state of expected fullness," as if the body had already consumed a rich, satisfying meal. The milk chocolate scent likely enhances performance by creating a more pleasant workout environment through its pleasurable aroma.
While the study indicates potential benefits from smelling favorite foods before exercise, the authors caution that the findings are preliminary and based on a small sample size. They recommend further research with larger groups to validate these results. Meanwhile, opening a bar of dark chocolate and inhaling its aroma before training might offer a simple and enjoyable way to improve workout outcomes.
