Dark Chocolate and Tea Together Boost Heart and Vascular Health, Studies Show
Nutrition experts highlight that consuming dark chocolate and tea together can significantly benefit cardiovascular health, especially when maintained over a period of four to eight weeks. The key compounds responsible are flavonoids, with an effective daily intake estimated at 500 to 600 milligrams. This can be achieved by drinking two to three cups of tea, eating one to two servings of dark chocolate, or combining various flavonoid-rich foods.
Recent research reveals that flavonoid-rich foods may protect men's vascular health against the negative effects of prolonged sitting. In a study, men who consumed a flavonoid-rich cocoa drink before sitting for two hours did not experience a decline in flow-mediated dilation, a measure of arterial flexibility. Conversely, those who drank a low-flavonoid beverage showed reduced vascular function. Previous studies indicate that a 1% decrease in vascular function correlates with a 13% increased risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes.
Experts caution that while tea and dark chocolate contribute to heart health, they are not standalone treatments for high blood pressure. These foods should complement a healthy lifestyle that includes balanced nutrition, regular exercise, weight management, and adherence to prescribed medications. People with chronic illnesses or those on medication are advised to consult their doctors before making significant dietary changes to ensure safety and maximize benefits.
