Israel Considers Expanding Pre-Military Preparatory Year Amid Rising Demand

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

Pre-military preparatory programs in Israel, known as mechinot, play a crucial role in shaping young Israelis' identities before their military or civilian service. However, these programs face a structural challenge: demand far exceeds their capacity. Each year, about 130,000 students finish high school in Israel, but after excluding Arab and ultra-Orthodox sectors, roughly 70,000 remain eligible. Of these, only around 6,300 are admitted annually to mechinot. Since the onset of the recent war, demand has surged by approximately 50%, leaving thousands of young people without access to this formative educational experience.

Originally designed as small, selective leadership groups, mechinot have become highly sought after, creating inequality in access to these educational resources. This has prompted a national debate on whether the mechina model should remain an exclusive privilege or be expanded into a broad, state-run framework. Several political parties have proposed abolishing the 12th grade and replacing it with a national preparatory year that would serve all students before their military or civilian service.

Such a reform could transform mechinot from selective institutions into inclusive, state-sponsored programs, potentially resolving the current access disparities. While existing mechinot might lose their unique character, they could redefine their roles as specialized leadership tracks or advanced programs. This discussion touches on fundamental questions about the state's role in civic identity formation, the relationship between education and the military, and the balance between diversity and national values in education.

Ultimately, the debate centers on equality and opportunity: whether Israel can afford to keep the preparatory year limited to a few or should guarantee it as a basic right for all youth. This issue strikes at the heart of Israeli education, determining who receives the tools for adulthood and who is left behind.
