Jewish Community Responds to Damage at Brzesko Cemetery in Poland, Vows to Preserve Dignity of the Dead

The Jewish community in Brzesko, Poland, has responded to reports and footage showing a tractor driving over graves and tombstones at the local Jewish cemetery during foundation work to repair a collapsed wall. The tractor caused direct damage to graves, breaking tombstones and scattering human bone fragments. Rabbi Ben Zion Reichberg, representing the Jewish community in Krakow, explained that the repair work was prompted by a serious incident where part of the cemetery fence collapsed onto a nearby street adjacent to a school, leading the Antiquities Authority to issue an emergency order due to safety concerns for children and passersby.

Rabbi Reichberg stated that despite explicit instructions for the contractor to work only along the roadside and avoid the graves, the contractor violated these orders about a week ago by improperly digging within the cemetery grounds. The community reacted swiftly and with shock, sending a rabbi to inspect the site on Sunday and issuing an immediate stop-work order that led to the site's closure and lockdown.

Since the halt of work, all efforts have focused on rectifying the situation. On the following Wednesday, all exposed remains were reburied with community representatives present, including Philip Spensky, a leading figure in the Jewish community. The area has been fully covered and monitored to prevent further desecration from weather or rain. The site remains closed and secured, with all work suspended pending clear instructions from rabbis and religious authorities. The community emphasized that they are doing everything possible to preserve the dignity of the deceased.

The Brzesko cemetery is the resting place of several revered rabbis, including Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Lifshitz, Rabbi Zalman Yehonatan, and Rabbi Pinchas Templer of Dombicz-Brzesko, among others. The community continues to oversee the cemetery's care and restoration following the damage.
