West Bank Becomes Israel’s Central Political and Security Front After October 7 Attacks

The story · English

Since the October 7 attacks, the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) has emerged as the focal point of Israel’s political, security, and diplomatic challenges. The shift is evident in the recent Likud primaries, where candidates such as ministers Shlomo Karhi, Miri Regev, Idit Silman, and Nir Barkat, along with MKs Ariel Kallner, Avichai Boaron, and Amit Halevi, centered their campaigns on asserting Israeli sovereignty and combating terrorism in the West Bank. This focus reflects the right-wing electorate’s demand for concrete control over the territory rather than vague rhetoric.

Internationally, the West Bank has become the main arena for diplomatic battles. After anti-Israel groups exhausted their narratives about Gaza, they redirected their campaigns to the West Bank, exemplified by the fabricated siege claims in the village of Kausara. Despite these claims being quickly debunked, the global community hastily condemned Israel, signaling the West Bank’s new status as a central front in the international struggle over legitimacy. Left-wing Israeli voices have been criticized for amplifying these false accusations.

Beyond politics and diplomacy lies a pressing security threat. The possibility of a large-scale attack originating from the West Bank, involving tens of thousands of Palestinian Authority fighters breaching Israeli communities, is no longer hypothetical but seen as inevitable. This scenario is explored in a new documentary titled "7.10 West Bank Version," which highlights classified documents and testimonies revealing how the Oslo Accords inadvertently enabled the development of a well-armed and trained Palestinian force.

Combining these political, diplomatic, and security dimensions, the article argues that the West Bank is no longer a peripheral issue but the core of Israel’s national challenges. The way Israel acts in the West Bank now will decisively shape its future, making it the heart of the country’s political, security, and diplomatic agenda.
