Israeli Soldiers Surviving October 7 Nova Party Attack Struggle for Recognition and Rights

The story · English

Nearly three years after the October 7, 2023 massacre at the Nova party in southern Israel, hundreds of Israeli soldiers who survived the attack and chose to continue serving face ongoing challenges in obtaining recognition, treatment, and benefits. The military system currently blocks claims while soldiers are still in service, forcing many to delay filing for compensation until after discharge. This bureaucratic hurdle has left 51 out of 185 soldiers present at the event without rehabilitation support from the Ministry of Defense's Rehabilitation Department, despite 134 receiving treatment.

Soldiers interviewed describe a painful dilemma: they refuse early discharge to access benefits, yet remain untreated during service, worsening their mental health. Civilians who survived the same attack received an automatic 17,000 shekel grant for immediate care, a benefit denied to soldiers, creating a stark disparity. In September 2024, the government approved recommendations to equalize support for soldiers and civilians affected by the attack, but implementation remains incomplete.

Personal accounts reveal severe psychological trauma, including PTSD symptoms, anxiety, and difficulty reintegrating into civilian life. Noam Arush, a reservist who lost a close friend during the attack, has not received any treatment and fears stigma if recognized as disabled. Others, like Roni, a Border Police commander, received partial disability benefits only after a prolonged fight, which were later halved, leaving her struggling financially and emotionally.

Advocates emphasize the need for proactive outreach and comprehensive support from the Ministry of Defense to ensure all affected soldiers receive timely care and benefits. The IDF spokesperson stated that soldiers exposed to trauma on October 7 are entitled to immediate mental health treatment without bureaucratic delays, and the Rehabilitation Department confirmed ongoing efforts to treat those who have applied. However, survivors and support groups call for urgent reforms to close the gaps and prevent further neglect of these soldiers' needs.

The survivors' stories highlight the ongoing impact of the October 7 attack on soldiers' mental health and the systemic obstacles they face in receiving recognition and support, underscoring a critical issue in Israel's handling of trauma among its military personnel.
