Israeli Premier League Legends Reunite at Bloomfield Stadium in Nostalgic Ceremony
A heartfelt reunion of Israeli Premier League football legends took place at Bloomfield Stadium ahead of the new season, bringing together players who collectively won 27 championships and 16 cups. The event featured iconic figures ranging from the 82-year-old Motaleh Shpigler and goalkeeper Yitzhak Visker, participants of the 1970 Mexico World Cup, to the youngest legend, 42-year-old Shalom Akiva from Tiberias. Each legend received their current team's new jersey, alongside retro shirts, as they posed for a group photo reminiscent of their playing days.
The gathering included renowned players such as Eli Ohana, Moshe Sinai, and Arik Benado, who holds the record for most Israeli league titles with nine championships and four State Cups. The atmosphere was filled with nostalgia and camaraderie, highlighted by stories of past matches and personal anecdotes. Ohana recalled being tasked with marking Shpigler during a game, while Visker brought his original 1970 World Cup jersey, sparking memories and friendly banter.
Other notable attendees were Ze'ev Zalzer, a veteran coach and player from Petah Tikva; Moshe Sinai, a symbol of Hapoel Tel Aviv; and Mishael Dayan and Ohana, representing Jerusalem's football rivalry. Abbas Suan, a prominent Arab-Israeli player and cup winner with Bnei Sakhnin, also participated, sharing his experiences and hopes for coexistence projects.
The event also featured Offir Talker, known for his time with Hapoel Haifa and Beitar Jerusalem, who maintained his trademark sunglasses throughout. The youngest legend, Shalom Akiva, spoke about his career and recent challenges faced by his club. The reunion concluded with Motaleh Shpigler reflecting on his career, emphasizing talent over genius in football and recalling a poignant moment from a State Cup final at Bloomfield.
As the legends departed, the stadium emptied, marking the transition from past glories to the upcoming league season, which was set to begin shortly after the event.
