Common Cleaning Mistakes Can Cause Poisoning from Toxic Gas Exposure

מאת אפרת ברינר

The story · English

Many people make dangerous mistakes during household cleaning that can lead to serious health risks, including poisoning. A key hazard is mixing cleaning products, such as bleach with ammonia or vinegar, which can release toxic gases like chloramine or chlorine gas. These fumes can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat, coughing, wheezing, and in severe cases, respiratory damage.

Another risk arises from using strong cleaning agents in poorly ventilated spaces, such as bathrooms, which increases exposure to harmful vapors. It is crucial to ensure proper airflow by opening windows or doors during cleaning. Additionally, using excessive amounts of cleaning products beyond manufacturer instructions can unnecessarily increase exposure to harmful chemicals.

Direct contact with concentrated cleaning solutions can cause skin irritation, chemical burns, or eye injuries. Wearing protective gloves and following safety guidelines is essential, especially when handling potent substances like drain cleaners or oven cleaners. Transferring cleaning liquids into beverage bottles poses a significant poisoning risk, particularly for children, and products should always be stored in their original containers and kept out of reach.

Users are advised to carefully read product labels for proper use, dilution instructions, and warnings against mixing with other chemicals. If symptoms such as burning eyes, coughing, or breathing difficulties occur during cleaning, one should immediately stop, move to fresh air, and seek medical help if necessary. In cases of chemical exposure to skin or eyes, following emergency instructions on the packaging and obtaining medical advice is critical.
