Israel Moves to Establish Smart Bomb Production Lines Amid Budget Dispute

The story · English

Israel's Ministry of Defense plans to establish new production lines for smart bombs and precision munitions for the Israeli Air Force, aiming to achieve military self-sufficiency amid rising tensions with Iran. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers for critical air force armaments. The decision follows heightened security concerns due to escalating US-Iran tensions and the possibility of imminent Israeli military action.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved a budget allocation of 40 billion shekels for this procurement effort, with 15 billion shekels to be released immediately and an additional 25 billion by the end of the year. However, the Ministry of Finance has reportedly refused to transfer the full funds to the defense establishment, causing significant delays. Defense officials warn that this budgetary impasse risks losing a crucial year of military buildup.

Despite the financial hurdles, the Ministry of Defense has decided to proceed with setting up the new production lines while continuing to negotiate with the Finance Ministry. The expansion also includes increasing production capacity for the Arrow missile interceptors. Defense sources criticize the Finance Ministry's approach, accusing it of underfunding defense and then blaming it for poor management. The Ministry of Defense emphasizes the urgency of maintaining momentum in military preparedness given the current security environment.
