Budget Dispute Escalates Amid Israel's Military Readiness for Possible Iran Conflict

As the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) remain on high alert for a potential renewed conflict with Iran, tensions are rising over the 2026 defense budget. Despite an agreement reached about two weeks ago between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and security officials to increase the defense budget by approximately 40 billion shekels, the funds have not been fully released. The defense establishment reports that around 15 billion shekels, earmarked for immediate transfer, have yet to be disbursed, leaving the joint decision by the Prime Minister, National Security Council, and the Ministries of Finance and Defense unimplemented.

Beyond the urgent billions needed for the IDF and Ministry of Defense to finance critical orders, authorization to commit to future defense procurement worth about 130 billion shekels, based on a broader 350 billion shekel plan starting in 2027 and spanning a decade, has also not been granted. The Ministry of Defense recently requested approval from the Procurement Committee to execute this authorization but was denied. Officials claim no budgetary source has been identified for this long-term plan, describing the situation as a regression to a previous crisis despite prior agreements.

Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee Chair Boaz Bismuth warned Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich that failure to fund approved amounts is harming defense plans and the IDF’s readiness, including replenishing stockpiles and weapons procurement. Bismuth cautioned that delays risk losing production slots with U.S. defense manufacturers. Smotrich responded that Bismuth’s claims show a lack of understanding and assured that funds will be transferred on time, asserting the current situation does not impair the Ministry of Defense’s ability to complete stockpiles or procure weapons.

The defense establishment paints a contrasting picture, warning that within weeks defense companies may have to halt production lines due to inability to place new orders. Smotrich accused the Ministry of Defense of frequently exceeding approved budgets without oversight and called on Bismuth to help establish control mechanisms to end the problematic situation.
