Israeli Air Force Combat Helicopter Squadron Relocates North Following October 7 Lessons

The story · English

The Israeli Air Force's 190th Combat Helicopter Squadron, known as "Magic Touch," has relocated from Ramon Airbase in the south to Ramat David Airbase in the north. This move, executed as part of the operational review following the events of October 7, aims to enhance readiness and provide a permanent, full-scale defense presence along Israel's northern border. Previously, combat helicopters had only a limited deployment in the north.

Established in 1980 at Palmachim Airbase, the 190th Squadron initially operated Defender helicopters before moving to Ramat David due to operational challenges. It was closed in 1994 with the introduction of Apache helicopters but reopened in 1995 at Ramon. The squadron's primary mission is to support ground forces and secure Israel's borders, having participated in major conflicts including the First and Second Lebanon Wars, the Second Intifada, and the recent Operation Sword of Iron.

Captain A., a helicopter pilot who joined the squadron in 2020, highlighted the squadron's critical role in providing fire support, reconnaissance, and rapid response to threats faced by ground troops. The squadron also played a key role in countering unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) threats, leveraging the Apache's slow speed and specialized armaments to effectively intercept hostile drones.

Major G., head of helicopter maintenance at Ramat David, explained that the relocation is part of a strategic shift to split helicopter forces between the north and south, ensuring a more comprehensive national defense posture. The transfer involves complex logistical, operational, and personal challenges, including relocating personnel and their families and retraining technical staff to maintain the helicopters at the new base.

This strategic redeployment reflects the Israeli Air Force's commitment to adapting its combat helicopter capabilities to evolving threats and ensuring rapid, effective responses across all borders.
