Haredi Mother Says System Blocks Her Son’s Attempt to Join Civil Service Programs

Karen, a mother of a Haredi yeshiva student seeking to serve Israel through civilian or national service, told C14 that despite persistent efforts, she has been unable to find a suitable framework for her son. Over the past week, she contacted multiple organizations including the Civil Service, police, Prison Service, and Magen David Adom (MDA) to locate a service track compatible with her son's religious lifestyle. However, she was informed that due to his current status in the military system, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) does not approve his acceptance into civilian or national service programs.

Karen said officials from the Civil Service and MDA explicitly told her that because her son holds a certain military classification, he cannot be integrated into these alternative service options. An MDA representative reportedly mentioned that over 2,000 Haredi youths are on waiting lists seeking to contribute but are unable to join. Karen criticized the gap between public discourse demanding Haredi enlistment and the lack of practical opportunities for those who want to serve in non-military roles.

She emphasized that not every Haredi young man fits the traditional combat military path, and therefore tailored alternatives are necessary to enable meaningful service. Karen called on policymakers to address this issue and provide frameworks that respect religious lifestyles while allowing Haredi youth to contribute. She wants to highlight the voices of Haredi parents and youths who face closed doors despite their willingness to serve.
