Swedish Education Minister of Palestinian-Lebanese Descent Wears Star of David Amid Rising Antisemitism

תורגם ותומצת מתוך N12 על ידי baba
The story · English

Simona Mohamsson, Sweden's Education and Integration Minister, has sparked controversy after publicly wearing a Star of David during a televised political debate. Born in Germany to a Palestinian father from Haifa and a Lebanese mother, Mohamsson, who identifies as atheist, declared she wears the symbol to support Jewish children in Sweden who feel unsafe doing so themselves.

During the debate, Mohamsson sharply criticized Sweden's Left Party for what she described as their "love letters to Hamas" amid growing antisemitism in the country. She emphasized her vision for a Sweden where no one needs to hide their faith or origin.

Following her statements, Mohamsson has faced a wave of hostile and antisemitic responses online, including accusations that her support for the Jewish minority equates to backing Israel. She responded by highlighting the strength of anti-democratic forces spreading hatred against Jews and affirmed her public duty to oppose them.

The incident has ignited a local public debate on antisemitism and political attitudes toward the Jewish community in Sweden.
