The USS Abraham Lincoln, home to about 5,000 crew members, has been deployed for over 260 days, with more than 200 days at sea without a port visit. One sailor's mother described her son receiving a meal of half a cup of rice and two tortillas. Lawmakers have demanded answers from the Department of Defense regarding these conditions.
The video and reports have fueled political criticism, with some accusing the Trump administration of risking American lives in conflicts serving Israeli interests. Online commentators expressed frustration over prolonged deployments and questioned the strategic value of the carrier's presence near Iran. The Navy has stated that no increase in suicidal ideation has been detected among the crew and emphasized the availability of medical and mental health support. Defense Secretary Pete Gossage and acting Navy Secretary Hang Cao defended the crew's resilience and the ship's operational readiness.
Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of US Central Command, recently visited the USS Abraham Lincoln ahead of its planned return to the US. He praised the crew's performance during an intense deployment involving over 10,000 flight operations and about 200 days in a combat zone. The deployment is considered one of the most operationally significant in recent history. The carrier is expected to be relieved by the USS George Washington.
