The story · English

Lior Moshe, a 43-year-old resident of Toms River, New Jersey, pleaded guilty to orchestrating a $47 million investment fraud that primarily victimized members of the local Haredi community. The federal court in Trenton heard the case on Thursday, marking the end of a painful chapter for nearly 100 investors, most of whom were from the Haredi community. Moshe's sentencing is scheduled for December 2026.

According to prosecutors, Moshe operated "Capital Funding ASAP" from June 2019 to June 2023, promising investors high returns between 9% and 53% on short-term business loans. However, the scheme was a classic Ponzi fraud, with funds from new investors used to pay returns to earlier ones. Approximately $11 million was diverted for Moshe's personal expenses, including gambling debt repayments, extensive home renovations, mortgage payments, and car loans.

Robert Frazer, the U.S. Attorney for the District of New Jersey, condemned Moshe for exploiting the community's trust and personal relationships to carry out the massive fraud. In parallel to the criminal case, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filed a civil lawsuit against Moshe and two associates to recover some of the lost funds for the victims. Legal representatives for the victims acknowledged that most investors are unlikely to recover their full investments.

This case echoes a recent scandal involving Ethiopian gold mining investments that similarly defrauded members of the Haredi community in Israel by abusing communal trust. Authorities emphasize ongoing efforts to expose financial frauds and protect investors, particularly within vulnerable communities.

Summary: Lior Moshe admitted to running a $47 million Ponzi scheme targeting the Haredi community in Toms River, New Jersey, with sentencing set for 2026. The fraud involved false promises of high returns and misuse of investor funds for personal expenses. Civil actions aim to recover some losses for victims, though full restitution is unlikely.
