Maya Eldror, a 36-year-old sleep consultant and babywearing instructor from Israel, began practicing an infant potty communication method known as "Pishpushim" just days after her daughter was born. Instead of waiting for diapers to fill, Eldror would hold her newborn over the sink to relieve herself, quickly recognizing her baby's signals for needing to go. This approach, which involves identifying pre-elimination cues such as body movements, facial expressions, or fussiness, allows parents to assist infants in voiding outside diapers, often using sinks, bowls, or later, potties.
Eldror first encountered the concept at 19 and gradually adopted it with her children, starting with her second child at ten months and fully embracing it from birth with her third. She emphasizes that perfection is not required; even partial success fosters communication between parent and child. The method is flexible, with some families using cloth diapers or disposable ones as backups.
Oren Baruch, a facilitator of Pishpushim groups, highlights that the approach is a journey rather than a strict method, with successes and setbacks common as infants develop new skills. Parents learn to recognize unique signals from their babies and focus on key times when elimination is more likely, such as after sleep or feeding.
Another advocate, Anat Asaf, mother of five, adopted the practice to reduce disposable product waste and promote natural parenting. Despite some criticism, including accusations of abuse, she maintains that each family should choose what suits them best. Social worker and sleep consultant Inbal Elboum also supports a balanced approach, combining diaper use with potty communication as a safety net.
Developmental psychologist Maria Titov acknowledges the benefits of observing infant cues to build communication and self-regulation but cautions against overemphasis on elimination to avoid parental pressure or tunnel vision. She stresses that voluntary bladder and bowel control develops gradually and that parents should respect each child's pace.
