Dr. Itai Gal Outlines Simple Steps to Prevent Sudden Infant Death During Sleep

תורגם ותומצת מתוך Maariv על ידי baba
The story · English

Dr. Itai Gal highlights that sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) remains a major concern for parents but can be mitigated through consistent, simple safety measures. The primary recommendation is to always place infants on their backs for sleep, both day and night, as sleeping on the stomach or side increases the risk of SIDS, especially before the baby can roll over independently. Even babies who spit up should be placed on their backs unless a doctor advises otherwise.

Overheating is another common risk factor, particularly in winter. Parents are advised to dress infants in appropriate layers and use a certified sleep sack instead of loose blankets. Signs of overheating include sweating, very warm chest skin, restlessness, or unusual drowsiness. Wearing a hat indoors during sleep is generally unnecessary unless medically recommended.

Additional protective factors include breastfeeding, avoiding exposure to smoke, ensuring proper prenatal care, keeping vaccinations up to date, and room-sharing without bed-sharing during the first months. Room-sharing means the infant sleeps in the parents’ room but in a separate crib or bassinet. Dr. Gal stresses that parents should maintain consistency with these guidelines across all sleep times, including naps at home or elsewhere, emphasizing a firm, flat sleep surface free of extra bedding or toys. While this may seem less cozy, it is the safest approach to reduce risk.

Parents are encouraged not to panic but to be vigilant and consistent in following these practices. Any warning signs in infants should prompt immediate medical evaluation.
