AI Drives Organizational Flattening and Shifts Roles from Managers to Experts

The story · English

Recent waves of restructuring and layoffs in global tech giants reflect a broader transformation in the labor market driven by artificial intelligence (AI). These companies are reducing middle management layers, shifting many managers back to their original expert roles as individual contributors. Historically, middle managers served as essential intermediaries, overseeing workflows, approving budgets, and coordinating between teams due to information limitations. However, AI tools now analyze data in real time, assign tasks, monitor productivity, and identify bottlenecks more efficiently, making many traditional managerial functions redundant.

This organizational flattening is not merely a short-term cost-cutting measure but a structural change in workplace architecture. As technology becomes more accessible and organizations demand rapid responsiveness, the traditional hierarchical pyramid can slow decision-making and create unnecessary organizational noise. This new reality calls for a rethinking of career paths, where professional advancement no longer means moving into management but deepening expertise, leading projects, and mastering new technological tools.

Future labor markets are likely to value strong individual contributors with broad influence, offering them career and compensation tracks parallel to managerial roles. Managers displaced by this flattening must reinvent themselves by developing two key skill sets: technological expertise to leverage AI for organizational improvement, and complex soft skills such as empathetic leadership, conflict resolution, mentoring, and strategic collaboration. The manager of tomorrow will act less as a task supervisor and more as a facilitator, mentor, and ethical compass for their teams. This analysis was provided by Dror Litbak, CEO of ManpowerGroup Israel.
