The story · English

In early spring 2024, six months after the October 2023 attacks, coach Barak Peleg arrived in Israel’s South Border region, known as the Gaza Envelope, to lead a new basketball team amid the area’s recovery. Peleg, formerly head coach of Hapoel Galil Elyon, relocated with his family to the region, embracing the challenge of building a team and community spirit in a place still marked by trauma and evacuation.

The initiative began in late 2023 with Amitt Gal, former manager of Galil Elyon, who envisioned basketball as a source of life and joy for the war-affected southern communities. Together with Tal Russo, a former Southern Command champion and the team’s chairman, they worked for six months to recruit local leaders and players, overcoming initial fears and logistical challenges. The team, named M.C. Otzma HaDarom (South Envelope), started competing in Israel’s National League (second division) in October 2024, bypassing lower leagues to attract sponsorship and support.

Peleg describes the region as a “hidden land” with a unique mix of beauty and tension, where life continues quietly despite the proximity to conflict. The team’s first season was tough, ending with one win after 26 losses, but it sparked growing community enthusiasm. By the second season, the team reached the playoff quarterfinals with 13 wins, drawing an average of 300-400 fans per game, including organized supporters traveling to away matches.

The club operates with a modest budget of 3-4 million shekels, funded mainly by sponsors such as Bank Leumi and local businesses, as well as regional councils and the Israeli Basketball Association. Peleg juggles coaching with fundraising and management duties, supported by a dedicated local staff and volunteers. The team is deeply integrated into the community, engaging in school mentorships and local events, fostering a sense of belonging and renewal.

Peleg reflects on his personal journey from a military officer and top-league coach to a committed leader of this unique project. Despite offers to return to higher-profile teams, he remains dedicated to the South Envelope team, viewing it as a life project that symbolizes rebuilding and hope amid ongoing challenges. The club’s story is one of resilience, community, and the power of sports to heal and unite.

Summary: Coach Barak Peleg relocated to Israel’s South Border region in 2024 to build a new basketball team, M.C. Otzma HaDarom, as part of community recovery after the 2023 attacks. Despite initial hardships, the team has grown into a symbol of local resilience, drawing strong community support and competing successfully in the National League.
