EU Ambassador Praises Israeli Resilience Amid Conflict, Condemns Rising Antisemitism in Europe

Michael Mann, the European Union ambassador to Israel since September 2025, recently shared his experiences living in Israel during the escalation of conflict in February 2026, just nine days after his daughter was born in the country. In an interview on the "The Ambassador's Room" podcast by the Center for Jewish Impact, Mann expressed admiration for the resilience of Israelis, describing how people quickly return to normal life after air raid sirens, such as resuming drinking wine in Tel Aviv bars immediately after seeking shelter.

Mann also addressed the troubling rise in antisemitic incidents across Europe following the events of October 7, 2025. He condemned such acts as "shameful" and emphasized the distinction between legitimate criticism of Israeli policy and hatred toward Jewish people. He outlined the EU's ten-year strategy to combat antisemitism, enhance security for Jewish institutions, and support Jewish life on the continent.

Discussing his personal adjustment to life in Israel, Mann noted cultural challenges like Israeli driving but praised the local cuisine, highlighting the freshness and flavor of Israeli produce compared to Europe. He fondly recalled traditional Shabbat meals and expressed affection for Moroccan fish and falafel. Mann’s favorite Hebrew word is "yofi" (beauty), and he plans to take a "hamsa" amulet as a keepsake after his tenure.

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Mann reaffirmed the EU’s support for a two-state solution, envisioning a future Palestinian state living peacefully alongside Israel. He stated that Hamas will have no role in Gaza’s future governance, emphasizing the need for the Palestinian Authority to govern both the West Bank and Gaza after reforms. Mann condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization and highlighted EU sanctions and training programs for Palestinian police aimed at promoting stability.
