Israeli Judo Champion and Officer Roi Miller Falls in Gaza, Leaving Lasting Legacy

The story · English

Captain Roi Miller, an outstanding Israeli soldier and former national judo champion, chose a challenging path of combat service and leadership. His mother, Ariela Miller, shared an emotional interview recalling her son's dedication, leadership, and the impact he left on his soldiers before he was killed in battle in Gaza. Roi excelled academically, completing 40 matriculation units with honors, and was also a Bible quiz participant, but his true passion was serving Israel in a combat role. He enlisted in the Givati Brigade, led a platoon mostly composed of soldiers from ultra-Orthodox backgrounds, and was known not just as a commander but as a father figure and friend who cared deeply for his troops, many of whom were lone soldiers without family support.

During the October 7 terror attack, Roi and his battalion quickly mobilized from the Golan Heights to southern Israel and then into Gaza, where they spent days rescuing civilians. He fought continuously for nine months in Gaza, rarely returning home. Just a day and a half before a planned break from combat, Roi identified approaching terrorists and led his soldiers in a counterattack, sacrificing his life to save his men, all of whom survived and recovered.

Since his death, the Miller family home has become a place of remembrance and unity, hosting gatherings that bring together people from diverse backgrounds, reflecting Roi’s belief in seeing beyond external differences. A Torah scroll was written in his memory and traveled to 18 locations across Israel, symbolizing his spirit of connection and service. Ariela Miller emphasizes the importance of maintaining joy and gratitude even in grief, believing that faith guides and sustains them through hardship. She describes Roi’s upbringing as rooted in faith and values that shaped him into a leader who inspired others.
