Three Toddlers Hospitalized in Nazareth After Cannabis Exposure
In recent weeks, three toddlers aged between one and three were admitted to the pediatric emergency department at the French Hospital in Nazareth after exposure to cannabis. In two cases, the children ingested hashish, while in the third, there was suspicion they consumed chocolate or a cookie containing cannabis. Initially, one family reported their child had a head injury after the toddler became unusually drowsy. However, urine tests at the hospital indicated cannabis exposure, which was later confirmed by laboratory analysis. Brain imaging ruled out any intracranial injury.
All three children were initially treated in the pediatric intensive care unit before being transferred to the general pediatric ward. Their conditions improved, and they were discharged home. Following protocol, the cases were reported to the police. Dr. Bashara Mansour noted a sharp increase in cannabis poisoning cases among young children in recent years, mainly due to accidental ingestion of edible cannabis products such as gummies, sweets, and baked goods containing THC. These products often resemble regular food, posing a risk to children.
Common symptoms of cannabis poisoning include drowsiness, apathy, unsteady walking, and decreased muscle tone. The severity depends largely on the amount ingested relative to the child's weight. Due to their low body weight, even small amounts can be significant for toddlers. Severe cases may involve decreased consciousness, respiratory depression, heart rhythm and blood pressure disturbances, seizures, and respiratory arrest. There is no specific antidote for cannabis poisoning; treatment focuses on monitoring and supportive care.
Dr. Mansour emphasized the importance of keeping cannabis products out of children's reach and sight, preferably in locked original packaging. He urged immediate medical evaluation if ingestion is suspected.
