Summer Fruits Watermelon, Apricot, and Grapes Offer Unique Nutritional Benefits at Peak Season

The story · English

As summer peaks in Israel, three fruits stand out for their unique nutritional advantages: watermelon, apricot, and grapes. Despite the availability of many fruits year-round, these seasonal fruits are at their best now and provide distinct health benefits.

Watermelon, composed of about 90% water, is excellent for hydration during hot days. It is also rich in lycopene, a powerful antioxidant linked to cardiovascular health and protection against oxidative damage. Some watermelon varieties contain lycopene levels comparable to or exceeding those in tomatoes. Additionally, watermelon contains citrulline, an amino acid that supports blood flow and vessel dilation. A typical serving is about 300 grams or two cups of diced watermelon, which can be eaten alone or combined with cheese, yogurt, or nuts for a balanced snack.

Apricots have a notably short season in Israel, often lasting only a few weeks. They are rich in beta-carotene, which the body converts to vitamin A, essential for vision, skin health, and immune function. Apricots also provide potassium, important for fluid balance and muscle function, and dietary fiber that promotes satiety. One serving equals three to four medium apricots.

Grapes, a hallmark of Israeli agriculture, reach their peak sweetness and nutritional value in summer. They contain a complex mix of polyphenols, especially in red and black varieties, which have been extensively studied for cardiovascular benefits. Grapes are convenient to eat without peeling or preparation, making them a healthy alternative to processed sweets. Although grapes contain natural sugars, their fiber and water content help integrate them well into a balanced diet. A serving is about one cup or 150 grams, roughly 20 to 25 grapes.

These fruits not only offer hydration and antioxidants but also contribute to a balanced diet during the hot Israeli summer months. Now is the ideal time to enjoy them while they are fresh and nutritionally potent.
