Study Finds Everyday Appreciation and Time Together Key to Lasting Love in Israeli Couples

A recent study led by Professor Liat Kolik, Dean of the School of Behavioral Sciences at Netanya Academic College, challenges the notion that grand romantic gestures define true love. Conducted via the Panels Institute, the research surveyed 280 Israeli men and women aged 26 to 83 in relationships, examining the frequency and types of romantic gestures and their connection to relationship satisfaction.

The study identified five main categories of romantic expressions: physical gestures, gifts and attention, practical tasks, quality time, and verbal appreciation. Contrary to popular belief, gifts were not the most common expression; instead, verbal appreciation, spending quality time together, and physical affection topped the list. Participants reported similar patterns in both giving and receiving these gestures, indicating a shared "love language" within couples rather than individual differences.

Surprisingly, the research found minimal gender differences in how love is expressed daily, contradicting stereotypes that men and women communicate love differently. Age also influenced frequency but not the hierarchy of preferred gestures, with younger adults showing slightly higher frequency and older adults less, yet all age groups prioritized appreciation, time, and physical closeness.

Professor Kolik emphasized that love is built through consistent, everyday interactions such as compliments, listening, and shared moments rather than occasional dramatic events. These small, repeated acts foster closeness, security, and well-being. While the study could not definitively prove causation, it revealed strong correlations between frequent romantic gestures and higher relationship satisfaction, life meaning, and positive emotions.

Kolik recommends couples focus on simple, sincere expressions like verbal appreciation and attentive listening rather than costly gifts. This approach not only nurtures the relationship but also enhances overall mental health and life quality. The findings expand on Gary Chapman's "love languages" theory by highlighting a shared couple-based love language system rather than individual preferences.
