Netflix’s 'The Last House' Portrays Pandemic-Era Apocalypse but Fails to Engage
Netflix released "The Last House," a sci-fi horror drama reflecting the COVID-19 lockdown experience, set in a Seattle suburb where a mysterious, unbreakable rain traps a family inside their home. The film, debuting in late 2026, explores themes of isolation and survival reminiscent of pandemic trauma, but critics question whether the subject still resonates years later.
The story follows Jason, an unemployed engineer and unsuccessful fisherman, his wife Ann, and their two children as they face an inexplicable event that cuts off all communication and locks them indoors. Despite the surreal scenario, the family initially reacts with surprising nonchalance, and the film focuses on their adaptation, including the parents teaching survival skills and entertaining the children to maintain sanity.
The film draws inspiration from classic sci-fi and disaster motifs, opening with a quote from Arthur C. Clarke and evoking Spielberg’s "Jaws" in its opening scenes. However, the narrative relies on several contrived plot devices, such as prolonged electricity and food supplies, to sustain the family’s survival, which strains credibility.
As the story progresses, hostile entities begin to threaten the family, leading to a climax involving traps reminiscent of "Home Alone." Yet, the film’s explanation of the threat remains vague and unconvincing, lacking coherent integration of ecological, psychological, or political dimensions. Despite strong performances by Oscar-nominated actors Wagner Moura and Greta Lee, and director Louis Leterrier’s experience in action and puppetry, the film’s fast editing and underdeveloped plot diminish its impact.
Ultimately, "The Last House" is seen as a missed opportunity that might have been better suited for theatrical release had it been more compelling. Viewers are advised that it may not be worth watching even at home.
