American Firm Apollo Acquires EasyJet for £5.7 Billion, No Immediate Return to Israel Planned

The story · English

American investment giant Apollo is set to acquire the low-cost airline EasyJet for approximately £5.7 billion, paying £7.15 per share. The deal follows months of interest from various investment funds, including Castlelake, which ultimately withdrew from the bidding war. Due to European foreign ownership restrictions on airlines, Apollo will hold a maximum of 49.9% of EasyJet, with founder Stelios Haji-Ioannou and his family retaining shares post-acquisition.

EasyJet, known for operating flights from Israel to various European destinations, will continue its current strategy under Apollo's ownership. Apollo plans to support EasyJet's growth by expanding and renewing its fleet, growing EasyJet Holidays, and developing new revenue streams. The airline will maintain its low-cost model and brand identity.

Despite EasyJet's historical presence in Israel, there is no immediate plan to resume flights to Ben Gurion Airport. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of March 2027, pending regulatory approvals. Until then, Israeli travelers should not expect changes in EasyJet's service or routes. However, Apollo's financial backing could enable EasyJet to expand its network in Europe, potentially including a future return to the Israeli market.

Apollo has prior experience investing in airlines such as Aeromexico, Sun Country Airlines, and Atlas Air. EasyJet faces stiff competition in Europe from carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air, and Apollo's investment aims to strengthen its market position.
