Armed Bedouin Clans in Gaza Pose Political Challenge as Israel Waits

Armed Bedouin clans operating in multiple sectors of the southern Gaza Strip have become a significant security factor, challenging Hamas’s military interests. According to security sources, these clans fought fiercely against Hamas’s military wing at the height of recent conflicts, inflicting numerous casualties. Since the ceasefire declaration, they have assisted in securing the "yellow line", the area west of it, by detecting weapons and terror infrastructure both above and below ground.

A security official described the clans’ anti-Hamas activities as "intimate, covert, and highly effective," operating according to planned strategies. However, some voices within Israel’s security establishment warn of the risks in nurturing these armed groups for the post-conflict period, noting that some of their leaders have past involvement in criminal activities opposing both Hamas and the IDF.

Senior figures from the Peace Council, supported by the United States, advocate disarming these Bedouin clans after the conflict and returning them to Palestinian Authority control as part of a future Israeli withdrawal to the regular border line. Meanwhile, Israeli security agencies plan to keep some clans within the yellow line under IDF operational responsibility to ensure their safety. Officials describe the situation as a "political minefield" that the political echelon is reluctant to address, using the clans as leverage against Hamas and the Peace Council.

Warnings have been issued that disarming the clans could lead them to revert to previous activities such as smuggling. Despite close daily coordination between the IDF, Israeli security bodies, American officials, and the clans, there is currently no consideration of relocating them into Israeli territory.

In September 2025, amid intensified IDF ground operations in Gaza, these armed clans demonstrated territorial control by deploying hundreds of operatives at entrances to various areas to repel Hamas security forces, including the violent "Arrow Unit," which targets collaborators with Israel through arrests, assaults, and killings.
