Former NBA Player Enes Kanter Registers for WNBA Draft to Challenge Gender Policies

The story · English

Enes Kanter Freedom, a former NBA player known for his 11 seasons in the league, has announced his intention to register for the WNBA draft, sparking a major controversy in American sports. Standing 2.08 meters tall and weighing 115 kilograms, Kanter has not undergone any biological changes but declared himself a woman to test the WNBA's policies on gender identity and transgender athlete participation. His move is intended as a protest to highlight perceived loopholes in gender definitions, as in some U.S. states, simply declaring oneself a woman is sufficient to be legally recognized as such, a policy that has led to men, including sex offenders, being placed in women's prisons.

Kanter, a Turkish national who supports Israel and is wanted by the Turkish government, does not plan to actually compete in the WNBA. Instead, he aims to expose what he sees as the liberal camp's flawed approach to gender in sports. While no WNBA team is obligated to select him, Kanter's physical advantages in height, weight, and strength would likely prompt the league to revise its rules to prevent biological males from competing. This stunt has ignited debate over gender identity policies in professional women's sports leagues in the United States.
