Israeli Families Divided Over Political Loyalties Ahead of Crucial Elections

מאת ערן ואקנין

The story · English

As Israel approaches pivotal elections, deep political divides are emerging within families, highlighting the tension between tradition and individual choice. In Ramla, 22-year-old Or Lagetvi stands firm in her family's long-standing loyalty to the Likud party, a tradition passed down through six generations. Despite facing criticism on social media for her unwavering support, Or insists she will not consider other parties, viewing her vote as part of her identity and family legacy. Her mother, Iris, emphasizes that such political allegiance is deeply rooted and unlikely to change.

Conversely, the Adar family from Kibbutz Beit HaShita, traditionally Labor voters, exemplify a more open political environment. Daughter Shira Adar, while raised with liberal values and exposed to political discussions at home, stresses that she formed her own opinions and supports the Labor party for its stance on social issues. Her parents acknowledge the subtle influence of family but avoid pressuring their children, allowing space for independent thought. However, they admit they would be disappointed if Shira shifted her vote to Likud due to ethical concerns about its leadership.

The Weitzman family from Netivot illustrates the challenges of breaking political traditions. Liat Weitzman, who switched her support from Likud to Naftali Bennett's party, faces familial tension, with her father accusing her of betraying their right-wing roots. Despite heated debates during family gatherings, her mother strives to maintain peace, emphasizing love and acceptance regardless of political differences.

In Kibbutz Bechen, the Unger family experiences sharp political disagreements, with father Michael supporting Likud and son Eli backing Gadi Eizenkot. Their household is marked by intense debates over Israel's current political and security situation, reflecting broader national divisions. Despite the conflicts, the family maintains respect and avoids physical confrontations.

Political socialization experts note that family remains the primary agent shaping political identity from early childhood, often intertwining voting behavior with personal and collective identity. However, adolescence and life experiences can lead some individuals to challenge or diverge from familial political traditions, contributing to the dynamic and sometimes fractious nature of Israeli family politics ahead of the elections.
