Young Family Builds Modern Home Blending Seamlessly Into Jezreel Valley Kibbutz Landscape

The story · English

In the heart of a kibbutz in Israel's Jezreel Valley, a newly constructed family home stands out for its design that respects and integrates with the local community and landscape. Designed by architect Itai Aviram from Studio Mishkan and interior designer Carmel Agami, the house was built for a young couple and their three children who wanted a spacious, modern home that connects private family life with the kibbutz's communal spirit. After living in a small house on the kibbutz outskirts, the family chose to build anew in the kibbutz's historic center, replacing a dilapidated old structure with a 190-square-meter home that reflects both their lifestyle and the area's architectural character.

The design features two sloped volumes echoing traditional kibbutz buildings, with a lightweight insulated metal roof instead of heavy tiles, and a slightly elevated concrete base with a wraparound porch to maintain privacy without fences. The house includes modern amenities like underfloor heating, water softening, central vacuum, and an outdoor shower near the laundry room for post-hiking or surfing use. A unique element is a secondary "back kitchen" adjacent to the main kitchen and yard, dedicated to vegetable fermentation, baking, and pasta making, catering to the family's organic vegetable growing and small chicken coop.

Inside, the layout divides into a private two-story wing with bedrooms and service spaces, and a central open area containing the kitchen, dining, and living rooms. A spiral staircase connects the two wings and brings natural light deep into the home through clerestory windows. Large, precisely crafted windows by Green Seal with Andersen frames blur indoor-outdoor boundaries, bringing in soft light and views of the green kibbutz surroundings.

Natural, simple materials such as rough plaster, softwood, exposed concrete, and muted colors continue inside, with custom wood furniture partly made by the father. The interior design emphasizes natural light, subtle textures, and a calm atmosphere with distinct lighting zones for different activities. Bedrooms are minimalist, bright, and oriented to northern views. The overall effect is a contemporary home that feels like a natural, longstanding part of the kibbutz community rather than a flashy new object.

"There was a clear desire not just to build a new house but one that feels belonging," said architect Aviram. Designer Agami added, "This home manages to be very contemporary while simultaneously feeling like it has been part of the kibbutz for years. It doesn’t try to stand out but to blend and breathe with its environment and serve life itself."
