US Intelligence Warns Putin May Test NATO Resolve With Limited Attack Amid Ammo Shortages

The story · English

New US intelligence reports released in Washington warn that Russian President Vladimir Putin might attempt to test NATO's resolve through a limited attack on a member state in the coming years. The scenarios considered by US intelligence range from large-scale cyberattacks to a limited ground invasion of a NATO country. This marks a shift from previous assumptions that Putin would avoid provoking NATO members while engaged in the Ukraine conflict. The change in assessment is attributed to Kremlin concerns over shrinking operational space in Ukraine and internal pressure to achieve a significant military success.

US and European leaders have noted signs that Russia is already probing NATO's response with targeted actions, including reports of Russian cruise missiles landing in Poland and drones entering Romanian airspace. Concurrently, Ukraine's drone strikes continue to inflict damage on Russian military and oil infrastructure, while Russian forces face heavy losses and limited gains on the front.

Amid these threats, the US faces a severe shortage of critical ammunition types necessary for confronting Russia or China in future conflicts. These shortages include long-range precision missiles, tactical missile systems, and short-range Stinger missiles used against aircraft. The depletion results from extensive arms transfers to Ukraine since Russia's invasion and ongoing US tensions with Iran, raising concerns about America's ability to respond effectively to large-scale military challenges.

Former President Donald Trump responded to the ammunition shortage reports by asserting that the US has an "unlimited supply" and is in excellent condition. He also mentioned ongoing negotiations with Iran, suggesting a potential agreement could be reached soon. The new intelligence assessments highlight a significant shift in the perceived Russian threat and underscore strategic challenges facing NATO and the US in the near future.
