Seminary Student's Matchmaking Meeting Ends in Tears but Sparks Personal Growth

מאת אריה רוזן

The story · English

Efrat, a young seminary student from a prestigious family in Bnei Brak, faced intense pressure to marry a true Torah scholar, as her community and family held high expectations for her future husband. During a matchmaking meeting with Yaanki, a top yeshiva student from Ponevezh, Efrat experienced a sudden, surprising thought: she wanted to become more righteous just to be worthy of a husband like him. However, a small gesture, a polite smile to the waiter, caused Yaanki to react coldly, leading him to quickly inform the matchmaker that the match was not spiritually suitable.

Distraught, Efrat returned home in tears and confided in her seminary rebbetzin, Malka, expressing feelings of unworthiness to marry. The rebbetzin listened patiently and reassured her that one imperfect meeting did not define her value or suitability for marriage. She emphasized that the idealized sacrifices of famous Torah women like Rachel, wife of Rabbi Akiva, were rare and not the standard expected of all young women today. Malka encouraged Efrat to appreciate her own small sacrifices and growth, which could be just as meaningful.

This encounter marked a turning point for Efrat, who began to see personal growth and maturity as part of her journey, rather than feeling crushed by the high expectations placed upon her. The story highlights the emotional challenges faced by young women in religious matchmaking and the importance of compassion and perspective in navigating these experiences.
