Israeli Teen with Tourette Syndrome Finds Freedom and Healing Through Piano Music

מאת אור הדר

The story · English

Rom (Roberto) Magen, an 18-year-old Israeli, has lived with Tourette syndrome for five years, enduring involuntary tics, sounds, and movements that often provoke negative reactions in public. Diagnosed at age 13, Rom’s symptoms worsened over time, making social interactions and school challenging. However, he discovered a refuge in playing the piano, where his tics temporarily disappear. "I feel free when I play," Rom told Israeli media, explaining that music offers him a unique escape from his condition.

Rom recently completed his first year at the prestigious Rimon School of Music in Acre, having been accepted despite his young age and lack of formal training. His father, Rotem, describes how music transformed Rom’s demeanor, easing his anxiety and allowing him to express a gentler side. Rotem also shared the family’s struggles, including a recent public incident where Rom was mocked for his tics, leading to a severe regression and hospitalization at Schneider Children’s Medical Center. There, specialized psychiatric care helped stabilize him.

Tourette syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by involuntary motor and vocal tics, often emerging in childhood and frequently accompanied by other conditions such as OCD, anxiety, and learning difficulties. Dr. Noa Ben-Aroya Milstein, head of the neuropsychiatric clinic for tics at Schneider, explained that while tics can be disruptive, many patients find relief through focused activities like music or sports, which engage the brain differently.

Despite increased awareness, Rom and his father emphasize the need for greater public understanding and empathy toward those with Tourette syndrome. Rom advocates for seeing beyond the disorder to the person, encouraging others with Tourette to embrace their identity and not be discouraged by stigma. "I want people to treat me as a person, not as Tourette," he said. His story highlights both the challenges and the potential for personal growth and acceptance through passion and support.
